Ear Fit Testing

Hearing Protection

In the uk over 1.1 million people are exposed to potentially damaging noise levels, on a daily basis, whilst at work, and a further 170,000 already suffer deafness, tinnitus or other ear conditions as a result of exposure to excessive noise at work.

The 4C's of Hearing Protection

  1. Comfort, ears come in all shapes and sizes. The right hearing protector should feel comfortable in the ear or on the workers head.

  2. Convenience, at work employees easy access to hearing protectors and make sure that the choices are specifically matched to the work environment

  3. Communication, the right hearing protectors reduces noise to a safe level, but avoids overprotection that compromises communication and workers safety on the job.

  4. Caring, many people don't realise that hazardous noise has cumulative effects. Demonstrating the importance of hearing protection is an important step in a successful hearing conservation program, and an important factor in maintaining an overall healthy lifestyle.

Spirometry

JBS offer on-site spirometry testing which gives a good indication of what is happening in the lungs, it helps aids diagnosis of diseases and can differentiate between diseases. diseases or conditions of the lung fall mainly into two classes - those that make breathing harder and those that damage the lungs ability to exchange carbon dioxide for oxygen.

Diseases or conditions that influence the mechanics of breathing:

  • Asthma: The bronchioles constrict, reducing the size of the airways. This cuts down on the flow of air and makes the respiratory muscles work harder.

  • Emphysema: The lungs become stiff with fibbers and become less elastic, which increases the workk of the respiratory muscles

  • Bronchitis: The airways become inflamed and narrower, which restricts the flow of air and increases the work of the respiratory muscles

  • Pneumothorax: Air in the chest cavity equalises the pressure in the chest cavity with the outside air and causes the lungs to collapse. This is usually caused by trauma or injury.

  • Apnea: Breathing slows or stops under a variety of conditions. There are many types of apnea, and they are usually caused by problems in the respiratory centres of the brain.

Diseases or conditions that minimise or prevent gas exchange:

  • Pulmonary edema: Fluid between the alveolus and pulmonary capillary builds up, which increases the distance over which gases must exchange and slows down the exchange.

  • Smoke inhalation: Smoke particles coat the alveoli and prevent the exchange of gases.

  • Carbon monoxide poisoning: Carbon monoxide binds to haemoglobin more tightly than either oxygen or carbon dioxide, which minimises the delivery of oxygen to all the tissues of the body, including the brain, the heart and muscles. Carbon monoxide is a common product of poorly vented heaters (space heaters, furnaces, water heaters) and of automobile exhausts. This condition can be fatal if not caught soon after exposure.

The BSIF have created an explanatory video as part of their ‘Clean Air? Take Care!’ campaign.
